News!

Greetings from Margy Gates Art! We have exciting news — Margy is once again available via brick and mortar. She was recently invited to be one of 14 select artists in a new gallery in Ventura Marina, Harbor Village Gallery and Gifts. Located in the marina’s busy Harbor Village, it’s just below the Comedy Club and down from Milano’s Restaurant. HVG has maintained a gallery presence for years at the north end of the Ventura Marina, but the new gallery is in a better, more centrally located space, where Margy now has a permanent display. As self-appointed Art Manager, I, Alison, will be volunteering roughly once a week at the gallery, proudly representing my mom and the other 13 talented artists in Harbor Village Gallery and Gifts. Original creations on display include sculpture, watercolor, pen and ink drawings, ceramics, jewelry, hand-painted hats and clothing, and many beautiful greeting cards, as well as stuff that defies any standard description. I am excited

Thanks for a Fabulous Farewell Party!

The party at Sea Gate Art Gallery and Studio on Sunday October 25th was lots of fun, as those of you who were there are aware! Starting at 4pm and winding up somewhere around 9, people came and went, or stayed to visit, sipped wine and lemonade, munched on cookies and some of the higher-class appetizers friends had brought (thank you Judy, Alice, and Natalie!) A few people wisely wandered through the gallery to the beach and enjoyed the wonderful sunset. To top it off, the moon gave us a huge showing. In the latter part of the evening friend John brought out his guitar, and he and I and Michelle sang Beatles songs and other un-rehearsed stuff and had a nice time tucked in one of the gallery’s tiny corners. A lot of people bought art, and Margy was thrilled to see so many of her originals, prints, ceramics and even a few posters go to good homes. A lot of people mentioned

Sea Gate Art Gallery & Studio Closing After 35+ Years. Let’s Celebrate!

After more than 35 years in the gallery business, Sea Gate Art Gallery & Studio on Hollywood Beach in Oxnard is finally closing it’s doors at the end of October. Margy’s funky beach gallery has been a favorite of locals and weekend visitors, where she offered up a fun and interesting collection of everything from $2 seashells to used and handmade jewelry to original framed watercolors and beautiful ceramics. She opened her first gallery in the 1980’s in the Marine Emporium Landing on Harbor Blvd. after moving out of the family house (with a lovely ceramic studio) in Claremont and onto a boat in Oxnard in 1978. A gallery space gave her room to paint and a place to sell her work, and was a lot easier than painting on the dock box in the wind. She later moved next door to Mrs. Olson’s Coffee Hut on Los Altos, sharing the space with a clothing company that sold cotton clothes that

Great Success at the FTD Awareness Dinner in Channel Islands

Sunday September 20th was a great night at the Waterside Restaurant in Channel Islands Harbor, CA, as we shared great food and listened to Kelly’s Lot play great music, and had a chance to bid on some great things in the Silent Auction, all to bring awareness to FTD — Frontal Temporal Dementia. Margy donated a stunning original piece that had been held in her private collection for almost 20 years, Alison’s Reef II, which went in the silent auction for $2000 to help raise money for FTD. In all, the evening brought in over $7000 for the cause, and we are so glad Karine Adalian, who hosted the event and will host others in years to come (and whose sister has been afflicted with this diabolical disease) had such a good turnout and support from friends and neighbors in the area. Above: Artist Margy, Singer Kelly, Host Karine, and Waterside Owner Steve So, onward and upward: the move to

This site is one of the formats offered by WordPress.com, and is, in essence, a blog. The main purpose of the site is to showcase Margy’s art, and make the giclee prints and her books available for sale, but here in the blog section we can add news and highlights, post new art that we’ve added to the site, and in

Ventura County Star on Margy’s Show at Gallery 28 at Seabridge

Photo by Rob Wishart Longtime Ventura County water media artist and plein air painter Margy Gates has a new show at Gallery 28 at Seabridge, near in the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, on view until July 9th when it returns to Margy’s Sea Gate Gallery and Studio. The collection includes watercolors from the past and also presents seven new acrylic pieces, which highlight the show with their complex style and powerful colors. Margy admits these works are quite personal, and signal a sharp turn in her already eclectic style. Inspired after a very challenging year personally, the expository nature of the work is quite engaging and has generated great enthusiasm. Another eye-catching piece, “Night Flight” is a deeply hued acrylic, which Margy says “may be the beginning of a long-postponed multi-media abstract series of world views from aircraft at cruising altitude.” Margy has been making art all her life. She holds a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Claremont

"What an incendiary show!" Pictures from Margy’s Opening at Gallery 28 at Seabridge

Margy and guests at Gallery 28 If you missed Margy’s gallery opening, you missed an exciting event! We’ve included some photos of the opening, which was on a beautiful evening on June15. One of the patrons said, “Margy, your work sets the world on fire!” The excitement started when the meatballs caught fire in the gallery’s kitchen. We were out getting a little fresh air while the fire trucks arrived….and the handsome firefighters took care of everything in short order. Just a little smoke…. Then they gave the all clear to have us re-enter and went on their way… Thank you, Oxnard Fire Department! Some patrons viewing Margy’s works. Looking at one of the newer pieces Margy’s famous Sunflowers, painted in the early 1980s, lighting up the gallery. Sunflowers World travelers, viewing paintings inspired by Fijian forests….
